The acute toxicity of copper to Gammarus fasciatus Say, a freshwater amphipod.
نویسنده
چکیده
The purpose of this toxicity test was to determine the reliability and comparability of Cu++ toxicity on Gammarus fasciatus. The study was conducted to compare toxicity results for Rainbow trout, Salmo ~airdneri Richardson, another coldwater poikilotherm. Since G. fasciatus comprises a major portion of the diet of many freshwater fishes, it can be stated to be an "important" species (PATRICK et al. 1968).

Acute Toxicity of Mercuric Chloride (HgCl2), Lead Chloride (PbCl2) and Zinc Sulfate (ZnSO4) on Silver Dollar Fish (Metynnis fasciatus)
Background: Since heavy metals can accumulate in the tissues of aquatic organisms, they can cause a range of hazardous effects which can become harmful to humans. The aim of this study was to investigate the acute effects of some heavy metals as potential dangerous substances by assessing the mortality effects of Mercuric Chloride (HgCl2), Lead Chloride (PbCl2) and Zinc Sulfate (ZnSO4) pollutan...
متن کاملAuthor ' s personal copy Are interactions among Ponto - Caspian invaders driving amphipod species replacement in the St . Lawrence River ?
Index words: Amphipod Echinogammarus Facilitation Gammarus Predation Round goby In Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, the Ponto-Caspian amphipod Echinogammarus ischnus has replaced the native amphipod Gammarus fasciatus on rocky substrates colonized by dreissenid mussels, which provide interstitial refugia for small invertebrates. Based on the premise that an invader's vulnerability to predation is in...
متن کاملThe effect of calcium and magnesium ratios on the toxicity of copper to five aquatic species in freshwater.
While it is generally accepted that water hardness affects copper toxicity, the major ions that contribute to water hardness (calcium [Ca] and magnesium [Mg]) may affect copper toxicity differently. This is important because the Ca:Mg ratio in standard laboratory-reconstituted waters often differs from the ratio in natural surface waters. Copper toxicity was assessed for five different aquatic ...
متن کاملPhysical factors affecting the relative abundance of native and invasive amphipods in the St. Lawrence River
The Ponto-Caspian amphipod Echinogammarus ischnus (Stebbing, 1899) is reportedly replacing the North American amphipod Gammarus fasciatus Say, 1818, in the lower Great Lakes, but the two species appear to coexist in the upper St. Lawrence River several years after invasion by E. ischnus. A multi-site survey in the river between Lake Ontario and Montreal (Quebec) found that E. ischnus and G. fas...
متن کاملCommunity interactions affecting the relative abundances of native and invasive amphipods in the St. Lawrence River
The Eurasian amphipod Echinogammarus ischnus is reportedly replacing the common native amphipod Gammarus fasciatus in the Great Lakes – St. Lawrence River system. A potential mechanism for this replacement is competition mediated by resident species. Other Eurasian invaders, dreissenid mussels (Dreissena polymorpha and Dreissena bugensis), dominate rocky substrates throughout the system and mig...
